8)      Introduction and application:

EDT is the monomer for producing poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/PEDT.

The polymerization of EDT can be carried out electrochemically or with an oxidizing agent such as an iron (III) salt. Polymerization in solution usually leads to insoluble, infusible powders with powder conductivity values up to 30 S/cm. Thin coatings prepared e.g. by spin-coating reveal conductivities of more than 200Ω/cm2.

PEDT displays excellent properties in comparison with other organic conductors such as polypyrrole and polyaniline. Higher transmission in the visible spectrum with comparable conductivity = transparent, colorless to bluish coatings Minimum surface resistively of approximately 150 ohms/square can be achieved, depending on the manufacturing conditions:

--Better resistance to hydrolysis

--Good photo stability and good thermal stability

--High absorption in the range of 900-2000 nm

--No absorption maximum in the visible spectrum up to 800 nm

PEDT made from EDOT can be used for the manufacture of intrinsically conductive, transparent coatings. The manufacture of antistatic and/or conductive coatings must be specifically adapted to the substrate to be coated. More detailed information concerning our previous experience with polymerization on various substrates and concerning possible PEDT solutions is available on request.
